This paper, An Attempt to point out, in a concise manner, the Advantages which will accrue from a periodic Review of the Variation of the magnetic Needle, throughout the known World; addressed to this Royal Society by William Mountaine and James Dodson, Fellows of said Society, and requesting their Contribution thereto, by communicating such Observations concerning it, as they have lately made, or can procure from their Correspondents in foreign Parts is a request by the Royal Society for current and updated data on the variation from true North of “magnetic needles”. The data would be used to make navigation maps more accurate.

The item, which measures approximately 6 ¼ x 8 ½ inches is a First Edition, extracted and disbound from The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Vol. 48, For the Year 1753-4, pages 875-880. This volume of the transactions was published in London in 1755. Its pages are tanned, but the text is clear and easily read. The overall condition of the paper, considering its age and being extracted from its original covers, is good.

The illustration accompanying this description shows the first page of the item.

William Mountaine was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1751. He died in 1779

James Dodson FRS (c.1705–1757) was a British mathematician, actuary and innovator in the insurance industry. Among his works was An Account of the Methods used to describe Lines on Dr. Halley's Chart of the terraqueous Globe, showing the variation of the magnetic needle about the year 1756 in all the known seas, &c.
