$400.00

This vintage copy of The Secret History of the Most Renowned Q. Elizabeth and the E. of Essex, by a Person of Quality was printed for the Man in the Moon; and Will o' the Wisp, in the Ecliptic. The date of publication is uncertain, although 1560 is handwritten on the title page. That date is not realistic, since the Earl of Essex did not gain his title until 1576. The real publication date may be much later than the handwritten year on the title page. The title page also indicates the book was published in Cologne; this also in uncertain – it more likely was published in London.

The book, which measures approximately 3 ½ inches wide by 5 ½ inches tall by ½ inch thick, contains 118 pages, with pages 3-4 missing, containing the story of the relationship between Queen Elizabeth and the Earl of Essex, told in two parts. The missing page may have contained a frontispiece. The text starts on page 5. The book’s pages are browned; some loose, semi-detached or chipped around the edges. The text is complete and fully legible. The book is bound in leather that shows its age; it is repaired with white, unattractive tape along the spine. Considering the book’s age, it is in fair condition.

The illustrations accompanying this description show the Title page, the front cover, and a typical 2-page spread of text.

Elizabeth I (7 September 1533– 24 March 1603) was Queen of England and Ireland from November 17, 1558 until her death in 1603. Elizabeth was the last monarch of the House of Tudor and is sometimes referred to as the "Virgin Queen". [Wikipedia]

Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex (10 November 156525 February 1601) was an English nobleman and a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I. Politically ambitious, and a committed general, he was placed under house arrest following a poor campaign in Ireland during the Nine Years’ War in 1599. In 1601, he led an abortive coup d’état against the government of Elizabeth I and was executed for treason. [Wikipedia]
