“The Story of a Lie and Other Tales” by Robert Louis Stevenson

$50.00

This copy of The Story of a Lie and Other Tales by Robert Louis Stevenson was published in Boston in 1907 by Small, Maynard & Company. Small, Maynard & Company is a now defunct publishing house. In its day it was a highly reputable house in literature, and several U.S. authors were published by it, including Walt Whitman. In the summer of 1907, the company acquired the Herbert B. Turner & Co. publishing company, which was less than five years old and had specialized in publishing classics such as a new, 13-volume edition of Robert Louis Stevenson’s works. As part of its early offerings, Small, Maynard published this reprint of the 1904 Herbert B. Turner & Co. issue of The Story of a Lie and Other Tales. The contents of the 1904 and 1907 issues are identical; the differences between the two issues are in the covers, e.g., the publisher’s name on the spine.

The book contains, in addition to The Story of a Lie, two additional stories, i.e., The Misadventures of John Nicholson and The Body-Snatcher. The book, which measures approximately 4 ½ x 6 ½ inches, contains 276 pages, plus a photograph of Robert Louis Stevenson as a frontispiece. The six pages prior to the Editor's Preface are detached, with all other pages in very good condition. The cover has the original red publisher's cloth with lettering and ornaments in gold on the spine and front cover and gilt top edges of the pages. A red cloth “string”, for marking your “place” in the reading, is also included. There is evidence of wear on the edges of the cover. It should be noted that the title page shows a publication date of 1905, while the page describing the content of the First Collected Edition shows a publication date of 1904. (both pages are shown in the illustrations above)

The illustrations accompanying this description show the cover of the book, the title page, the Editor's Preface (first page), the First Collected Edition summary, and the first page of The Story of a Lie.
